Thanks to a study on the ROI of bike-sharing services, commissioned by <g id=\"gid_0\"><g id=\"gid_1\"><g id=\"gid_2\">EIT Urban Mobility<\/g><\/g><\/g> and Cycling Industries Europe (CIE) and conducted by EY, this question has finally been answered with convincing figures. Presented in Brussels at the Cycling Industry Summit on 14 October 2025, this study marks a turning point for the bike-sharing sector.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"gb-headline gb-headline-02db88a8 gb-headline-text\"><strong>Measurable and impressive benefits<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The study reveals that bike-sharing schemes generate \u20ac305 million in annual benefits in Europe. These benefits are not limited to financial savings: they include gains in public health, reduced pollution, job creation and improved well-being.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"gb-headline gb-headline-840f34b1 gb-headline-text\">For example:&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.velogik.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Post-ROI-1-1-1024x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15644 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.velogik.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Post-ROI-1-1-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.velogik.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Post-ROI-1-1-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/www.velogik.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Post-ROI-1-1-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.velogik.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Post-ROI-1-1-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/www.velogik.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Post-ROI-1-1.png 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>46,000 tonnes of CO\u2082 and 200 tonnes of air pollutants are avoided each year thanks to bike sharing. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>1,000 chronic diseases are prevented, representing \u20ac40 million in healthcare savings. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>760,000 hours of productivity are gained, representing \u20ac30 million. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>6,000 full-time equivalent jobs are supported across Europe. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>These figures demonstrate that bike sharing is much more than just a mode of transport: it is a lever for urban transformation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"gb-headline gb-headline-f3b63201 gb-headline-text\"><strong>Already a positive return on investment<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Today, every euro invested in a bike-sharing service generates \u20ac1.10 in profits, <strong>a 10% return on investment. <\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.velogik.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Post-ROI-2-2-1024x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15646 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.velogik.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Post-ROI-2-2-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.velogik.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Post-ROI-2-2-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/www.velogik.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Post-ROI-2-2-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.velogik.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Post-ROI-2-2-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/www.velogik.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Post-ROI-2-2.png 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.velogik.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Post-ROI-3-1-1024x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15663 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.velogik.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Post-ROI-3-1-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.velogik.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Post-ROI-3-1-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/www.velogik.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Post-ROI-3-1-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.velogik.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Post-ROI-3-1-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/www.velogik.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Post-ROI-3-1.png 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p><strong>But this figure could rise to 75% by 2030<\/strong>, if services continue to develop, become electrified, diversify their offerings and expand into areas not yet served.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cyclingindustries.com\/what-we-do\/member-of-the-month\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nick Brown<\/a>, CEO of V\u00e9logik UK and project manager for the study, emphasises: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018For the first time, we can assign a financial value to the benefits of bike sharing, and the results speak for themselves. It&#8217;s not enough to simply say that cycling is good for mobility; we need to prove it by measuring the economic benefits for communities and citizens.\u2019 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"gb-headline gb-headline-fb438abb gb-headline-text\"><strong>The benefits of bike sharing are sometimes intangible but essential<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond the figures, the societal and environmental benefits are just as crucial: <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"gb-container gb-container-f436c927\">\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reducing regional inequalities: VLS makes areas poorly served by conventional transport accessible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Well-being: less stress, less noise, better air quality.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"gb-headline gb-headline-55177c64 gb-headline-text\"><strong>Barriers to overcome in order to maximize impact<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the obvious benefits of bike sharing, the study highlights several obstacles that are hindering its full potential. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cycling infrastructure often remains inadequate or unsafe, which limits its use for certain groups, particularly families. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Social acceptability varies depending on the area: in some rural areas or among people who are unfamiliar with cycling, skepticism persists.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A lack of inclusivity in the equipment offered: bicycles may be too heavy or poorly suited to different body types, making them difficult for some people to use. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Local authorities have a key role to play in overcoming these barriers. They must invest in suitable, secure infrastructure, expand fleets to meet the needs of all users, and fully integrate bike sharing into urban planning by connecting it to other transport networks. Clear, targeted communication about the benefits of the service is also essential to remove barriers and encourage public acceptance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"gb-headline gb-headline-9d6b35dc gb-headline-text\"><strong>Conclusion<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Bike sharing is not just a simple mobility service: it is a strategic investment for cities. It contributes to a healthier, fairer and more sustainable society.
